Project Description

In 2016 private community members joined with area businesses such as the Hospital, the colleges, and the Bank of Bennington to form the Bennington Redevelopment Group (BRG).  The goal of this group was to purchase and renovate a four-acre parcel in the center of downtown Bennington containing several historic landmark structures which were unused and deteriorating.  By rehabilitating vacant commercial space and sourcing higher-end tenants, and by providing opportunities for institutional cultural activities to gain a foothold, the BRG hopes to attract longterm residents to planned apartments on the upper floors which will increasing downtown density and lead to a rejuvenated Bennington town center.  MSK Engineering provided the surveying work and the civil design for the Putnam Block project which included detailed negotiation with the State of Vermont to navigate permitting for work in a designated flood plain area that involves the movement of urban soils.
